AI Hardware Is Coming: What Founders Should Prototype First
The strongest AI hardware prototypes focus on one magical loop instead of trying to become a full platform on day one.
Best for
AI product builders exploring physical devices, companions, tools, or interfaces
Prototype the interaction, not the entire company
AI hardware is tempting because the vision is large: a companion, a tool, a wearable, a home device, a desk object, a new interface. The first prototype should be much smaller.
Choose one loop that feels alive. Voice to response. Gesture to action. Sensor to recommendation. Camera to feedback. The prototype should make that loop tangible enough that people can react to it.
Decide what belongs on-device
AI products often mix local firmware, cloud inference, mobile apps, and device behavior. Early prototypes should define which parts must happen on the device and which can happen elsewhere.
This helps control cost and complexity. A demo unit can use cloud AI while still proving the physical experience, power behavior, connectivity, and user interaction.
Make the device express state clearly
AI feels better when the product shows what it is doing. A screen expression, light pattern, motion cue, sound, or haptic response can make waiting, listening, thinking, and responding feel intentional.
The best early AI hardware demos are not only technically functional. They make people understand the product without a long explanation.
